NEWMAN Collard Tennis Club in Liss is taking part in a 24-hour tennis marathon.

Commonwealth Gold medallist Jocelyn Rae and Danny Sapsford, the former Great Britain (GB) Davis Cup player who is now managing director of Bright Ideas for Tennis, will be playing tennis continuously for 24 hours.

This is the fifth such marathon organised by Danny and it will take place at the home of British tennis – the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton – on Saturday, February 17.

Danny and Jocelyn will be supported in their efforts this year by 12 clubs from across the United Kingdom, the new Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) chief executive, Scott Lloyd, and a selection of GB Davis Cup and Fed Cup stars.

Following Liss Tennis Festival – which raised money to provide free tennis opportunities for residents – Newman Collard Tennis Club is one of the 12 clubs from across the UK to have been invited to send a team to support Danny and Jocelyn in their efforts.

The 24-hour tennis marathon is a fundraising event, the aim of which is to help the 12 participating clubs raise money towards a project at their club.

Newman Collard is aiming to raise funds to refurbish its clubhouse and facilities so it is better able to support and promote tennis in Liss.

Nine players from the club will be making the journey to Roehampton and supporting Danny and Rae from midnight to 4am – the graveyard shift.

The club is also looking for any businesses or individuals who would like to support them.
