SUPPORT for her brave sister is the reason behind a Petersfield baker’s decision to ‘Brave the Shave’.
Tanya Merriman-Trigg, who bakes for the co-op in Moggs Mead, is having her locks shorn on Saturday (July 2) to raise cash for cancer charity Macmillan.
Her sister Karen Oakley (55) was diagnosed in April with a rare terminal blood cancer.
The mum-of-three, who used to live at Alton but is now in Surrey, has just undergone her third bout of chemotherapy, and has lost her hair.
“I said to her, ‘do you know what my love, you don’t have to do this all by yourself’,” said Tanya, who will take part in Macmillan’s ‘Brave the Shave’ fundraising campaign at Herne Leisure Centre at 2pm on Saturday.
This is part of a summer fete fun day she has organised at the centre, from 12.30pm to 3pm, and open to all, to raise cash.
There will be stalls, sweets and cakes, bric-a-brac, hook-a-duck, stocks and refreshments.
A big raffle with top prizes, including a night in a French chateau, dinners at local restaurants and treatments at local salons, will be held too.
Tanya, whose son Alfie (20) may have his head shaved too with his mum, says the town has been so generous. Her employer Co-Op has donated a barrel of beer.
Mobile hairdresser Marie Goffe will be shaving Tanya’s hair and fair goers will be able to pay to ‘hack the hair’ too.
“It’s a bit scary but I am going to have my head henna tattoed afterwards,” said Tanya.
